A renowned political analyst and social critic, Dr. Fabian Ihekweme has expressed worry over the prevalence of corruption in Nigeria especially among political leaders.
In a release made available to Society Mirror, the Imo State born astute politician said that only coordinated action plan from the people can mitigate the socio-economic menace.
According to him, until people hold the leaders accountable to their actions and inactions through social contracts, efforts to mitigate corruption in the country would result to nothing.
He said, "How can we mitigate corruption when there is no social order? How can we mitigate corruption when leaders are not being held accountable? How can we mitigate corruption when people rig themselves into power?
"Corruption can never be mitigated with the prevailing situations in Nigeria today. Corruption can only be mitigated with a coordinated action plan from the people.
He continued, "We have watched politicians and their promises, we have also seen very beautifully and extraordinarily crafted manifestos, yet corruption persists. I think, at this point, what we need, is a social contract that will bond all of us together, properly signed between delegates from the 27 LGAs that make up Imo state and a designated governorship candidate that we may wish to support. This is the only way we can hold leaders accountable."
"The social contract will spell out the People's expectations in every four years and when such expectations are not met to the letter, the re-election of such a leader will be rendered impossible. We were told that, in Democracy, power belongs to the people. This is the time to put it into action." he added.
