Int'l Youth Day: Youths urged to get involved in agro-businesses

As the International Youth Day is being celebrated all over the world, the youths of Imo State have been urged to get involved in Agricultural businesses for food security.

In creating awareness on the need for Youths to  get in involved in Agriculture, students from the  Imo State University, IMSU, Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO with students of AIFCE marched round Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri facilitated by Cara Development Foundation and CYDI under the Agric Budget plus Cluster whose advocacy is increasing the Agric budget to 5%  in partnership with Agricultural Science Students Association of AIFCE 

In his remarks, the Executive Director of CYDI, Felxfame Enisire said this year's theme of the International Youth Day was Green Skills for Youths Towards a Sustainable World, while the topic for the awareness was Youth Involvement in Agriculture: a step to Economic Development.

He noted that the objective was to promote Agriculture as a link to food security and economic development, educate youths on agribusiness strategies and procedures and to increase Youths interest and commitment to Agriculture. 

He urged the students to take the lecture serious. He posited that there is need for the Agric budget to increase to 5% in Imo State for food security.

The resource person, Elder Kenneth Amogu who spoke shortly after the creation of awareness centered on the role of Youths in Agricultural advancement and agribusiness strategy and approach noted that because the Youths form over 53% of people not employed in Nigeria, getting involved in Agricultural businesses will enable most Youths move away from unemployment, adding that they should continue to engage in various agribusiness strategies to increase their streams of income. 

He stated that there are alot of Agricultural businesses from production, distribution, storage and marketing, adding that even post harvest business which is one area that has not been tapped can launch the Youths to great heights of self sufficiency. 

The students expressed appreciation for the indepth learning and showed interest in agribusinesses to enable them earn legitimate source of income.
