Imo State Police command will tomorrow officially launch a new specialized unit called the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). The unit will be equipped with modern facilities for combating violent crimes like kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery and other related case.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye in a release said the new unit was established with the mandate to ensure swift response to violent crimes, respect for citizens’ rights, upholding professional standards, strengthening public trust, enhancing accountability and community partnership.
According to Okoye, the establishment of the new unit was an initiative of the the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Dish to guarantee effective policing across the country.
Our reporter gathered that the unit would be headed by a seasoned and professional senior police officer, while 60 well trained officers would be assembled from all tactical units of the command including the Anti Kidnapping unit to work under the unit.
He said, "The Nigeria Police Force, Imo State Command, cordially invites you to the official launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
"The VCRU establishment is the initiative of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu to establish specialized, highly professional units capable of effectively combating violent crimes like kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, etc while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, respect for human rights, and strict adherence to the rule of law."
The launching of the newly established unit came a day after the command concluded a 3-day comprehensive training programme for the over 60 selected personnel who will form the VCRU unit of the Command.
Okoye said the training focused on equipping the officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to discharge their duties responsibly and effectively.
This was as he reiterated the command's commitment to building a more responsive, accountable, and rights-respecting police force that enjoys the trust and confidence of the public.
Meanwhile, a source in the command who does not want his name on print disclosed that the new unit will replace the existing Anti Kidnapping Unit in the command. This is in line with the recent directive of the IGP to merge some tactical units across all the commands in the country for more effective and professional operations and service delivery.
