Chief Herbert Egenti has been elected the new President General of Amaigbo Town Union, ATU. Amaigbo Autonomous Community is one of the ancient and formidable communities in Nwangele Council Area of Imo State.
From the total of 154 votes cast, Egenti garnered 143 votes to clinch victory while his opponent, Chief Kelechi Duru who was nominated for the election and voted for in his absence, got nine (9) votes.
The election, held at the community hall, (Obi Igbo) yesterday, according to the chieftains of the community, can best be described as one of the most peaceful, transparent, credible, free and fair elections ever held in the history of the community.
Our reporter gathered that the exercise was conducted under the supervision of the media, representative of the traditional ruler of the community and security agencies including personnel of the police, Civil Defense Corps, Department of State Security, DSS, among others.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after his emergence, Egenti expressed gratitude to the electorate and the entire Amaigbo people for reposing their confidence in him through their mandate to pilot the leadership affairs of the community.
He also appreciated the state governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma; the council Chairman of Nwangele, Hon. Chief Paul Duru and the monarch of the community, Igbo of Amaigbo, HRH Eze Nelson Nwosu for their support that enabled the successful conduct of the election.
The new Amaigbo PG pledged to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, Chief Sir Fyne Jonathan Madumere led administration, while assuring that his leadership would be inclusive, accountable, transparent and committed to further development and general well-being of the Amaigbo community and her people.
He said, "Amaigbo Community in the past experienced a lot of backwardness in terms of development but the outgoing administration led by my good brother, Sir Fyne Madumere urshered in a progressive change and we are going to continue in that trajectory of growth, progress, unity and development of our town."
Earlier in his speech, Chief Madumere thanked every member of Amaigbo community for their support and cooperation during his administration and pledged to continually contribute his quota for the overall progress and development of the community.
More so, a chieftain of the community and Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, NUJ, Imo State council, Comr. Ifeanyi Nwanguma congratulated the new ATU leadership and urged them to live up to expectations.
In the other positions contested during the election, Mr Uche Anyiam emerged the Vice President 1 (VP1), Eng Frank Ejimkonye Anyiam was elected the Vice President 2 (VP2), Uzoma .H. Emeahu emerged the Secretary General while Mr Henry Nwaka and Mr Chima Dike were elected Assistant Secretary 1 and 2.
Also, Mr Cosmas Dike was elected the Financial Secretary, Johnblaze Ilodibe emerged the Assistant Financial Secretary; Nwanwuba Martins elected the Treasurer; Dr Udochukwu Agbarakwe won Public Relations Officer (PRO) position; Chimezie Kalu elected the Chief Provost while Nwachukwu Anele and Chidiebere Ihezue emerged Assistant Provost 1 and 2.
