The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Owerri Branch, Imo State, has conducted a performance and compliance assessment of the Lawyers' Remuneration Order, 2023, expressing satisfaction with the level of adherence among its members.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, April 1, at the Bar Centre, Owerri, the branch Chairman of the Lawyers' Remuneration Implementation and Enforcement Committee, Prof. Nnamdi Obiaraeri explained that the regulation, introduced in May 2023, was "designed to standardize legal fees across business, civil, and criminal services in Nigeria."
He noted that the branch in its determination to implement the regulation "has processed over 1,720 related documents," indicating strong compliance from members.
According to him, the assessment focused particularly on fees for drafting property-related documents such as Title Deeds and Irrevocable Power of Attorney.
Obiareri, a Professor of Law, Imo State University disclosed that under the order: Properties valued at ₦50 million and below attract 10% legal fees and additional value up to ₦100 million attracts 5%. He also said that properties above ₦100 million attract 7.5%, with 3% on subsequent value.
He explained that the order sets minimum standards for legal fees, while applications for pro bono services must be submitted to the branch for approval.
Stressing the need for awareness and understanding from members of the public, Obiareri also warned against engaging unqualified practitioners, noting that such actions could result in invalid or unregistrable documents with the Land Registry and other public institutions, adding that Lawyers who violate the order risk disciplinary sanctions.
Earlier, the branch chairman, Chief Chris Ihemtuge, described the regulation "as a tool for ensuring discipline, professionalism, and quality service delivery within the legal profession."
He appreciated members of the branch for their compliance, and urged them not to relent. He also encouraged residents of the state to seek legal services from members and to avoid patronizing quacks which comes with consequences and regrets.
The event was attended by NBA branch leaders from Oru/Oguta, Barr. Nelson Ezerioha, Mbano/Etiti, Barr. K.C Nwokorie, Mbaise, Barr. J. N. Nwawudu, as well as the Imo State Chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Barr. Phil Amaefule among others.
