Imo State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma has charged officers of the newly established tactical unit of the state Police command, Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU to always ensure that criminals are brought to justice without compromising the rights of innocent citizens and to always uphold professional standards.
He insisted that the fight against violent crime must be intelligence-driven, coordinated, and lawful, warning that, "any officer found engaging in misconduct will face disciplinary action in accordance with the Nigeria Police Act and other relevant laws."
Uzodinma, represented by his Chief Principal Security Officer, ACP Shaba Adamu Gboyoko gave the advice at the official launch and unveiling of the new tactical unit, held at the command headquarters, Owerri, on Wednesday.

According to him, "professional policing demands respect for human dignity at all times. It is not just about enforcing the law, it is about earning the trust of the people. Because public cooperation is essential in fighting crime. When citizens trust the police, they provide intelligence, report suspicious activities, and support security operations."
He further said,, "officers must understand that the use of force must always be reasonable, lawful, and necessary. Excessive use of force not only violates the law but also damages public trust in security institutions.
"Violent crime whether kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, banditry, or terrorism poses a serious threat to public safety and economic stability. Criminals who take up arms against innocent citizens are enemies of peace and must be dealt with firmly within the law.
"However, while we confront violent crime decisively, we must also remember that security enforcement must never come at the expense of citizens’ fundamental rights. The strength of any democracy is measured not only by its ability to maintain order, but also by its respect for justice and human dignity.
"Therefore, I advise all officers to uphold the professional standards, remain disciplined in conduct and appearance too, abhor corruption, extortion, and abuse of authority, as they weaken public confidence and undermines the fight against crime."
The Governor also used the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to provide an environment that guarantees adequate security and public safety for all Imolites through continuous support to the operational engagements of all law enforcement agencies in the state.
"As your Governor, I remain fully committed to ensuring that Imo State remains safe, secure, and governed by the rule of law." he added.
